Heading down to the gully |
On January 2
nd, 2016 Will, Dylan and I
ventured down into Dimple Dell Gully on snowshoes with the purpose of gathering
some natural foods for our meat rabbits. Being that it was the middle of winter
we knew that it was going to be a bit tricky to identify the plants (mostly
tree’s and shrubs) we were finding but we decided to gather a variety of
material to see what was appetizing to
the rabbits. We took a backpack, leatherman and camera with us. We had received
over 30 inches of snow in the valley so far so there was a lot of snow on the
ground and therefore, lots of rabbit tracks. At first we didn’t think about
looking at where the tracks were leading and what plants they were visiting. As
we walked down the path, Dylan decided she didn’t want to ride in the pack
anymore so she walked along the trail and found some great side trails that had
lots of over growth, perfect for shelter for rabbits and small mammals. We
decided that would be a great place to grab some plant material also. As we
gathered sticks and twigs I questioned whether our rabbits would eat what
looked to be the inedible part of the plant. It also made me long for the
spring, summer and fall days when we would find lots of green material to
gather in this area.
